Understanding the Terms of a Usability Testing Participant

Recruiting Definitions

Users – That’s you! A user is any person who is participating in a study.
Usability – This is what we do. We work with a variety of clients to conduct usability sessions in order to improve the ease-of-use of their product or website.

Recruiter – That’s us! We have the opportunity to talk to people like you and take you through what we call a ‘phone screen’ in order to determine your eligibility for the study and/or to determine whether you fit any of the user segments that are needed.

Analyst/Moderator – This is the person who will conduct your Focus Group or Usability Session.

One-on-one session – This is a usability session which includes you and an analyst/moderator reviewing a product or website one-on-one, with no other participants.

Focus Group – A small group of individuals who meet the target market of the product/website being evaluated and who will verbally share their opinions, perceptions and attitudes towards a product, service or website in a round table group setting.

Floater – This is a user who is scheduled as a backup for 2 or more sessions in case of a no-show or last minute cancellation. Floaters are typically paid a higher compensation because they have committed to cover 2 sessions, if needed. The floater comes to our offices during their scheduled time and will wait to see if he/she is needed. If the first scheduled user is unable to participate for any reason, the floater will fill in for that user and can leave immediately following the completion of that session. If the first user is able to participate, however, the floater will eventually be sent home (with their compensation). In any event, the floater will always receive the floater compensation amount, whether or not he/she participates.

Extra User – This is a user who is booked as a backup in case there were any cancellations or no-shows on the day of the research.
